Boss Up was founded by Ron Moelis, Chairman and Co-Founder of L+M Development, after he read a 2022 report by the Center for an Urban Future (CUF). He believed that capital support, training, and a network of supporters could make a significant difference for entrepreneurs. 

In its first year, Boss Up partnered with the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and the Department of Veteran Services (DVS) to create a business pitch competition for residents of public housing and veterans. Winners received grants, training, and access to a variety of resources to grow their businesses.

In 2024 Boss Up will hold pitch competitions for NYCHA residents (April) and veterans (November).
